Delegation is About the Future


This may make perfect sense, but it bears explaining - Delegation is more about the future than it is the present.

Delegating tasks enables people on your team to take on more and learn new skills. It also provides the manager more time to do tasks that are hopefully more important. Those are all current benefits.

The future benefits are more important - you've given the team additional skills that help them develop and make them more valuable. You give them chances to grow, which builds trust and appreciation from them. Finally, the manager can learn new skills and is prepared for a crisis. Imagine something happened and the manager had to be out of the office for a week - could the team still function? If you've been delegating appropriately, it shouldn't be an issue.
