Manager Serenity Prayer

Many of you have probably heard the Serenity Prayer at some point in your life:

I have my own version of the Manager's Serenity Prayer:

Give me the strength to do what is important,

the knowledge to delegate what isn't,

and the wisdom to know the difference.

Not exactly the most creative and clever version, but it hits all the right notes. Great Managers need to understand that they will have a more things To Do than time to get things done. This means having to say "no" to things that aren't important in the long run. The best way to do that is to delegate as much as you can to the team. It enables them to grow and you to focus more. It also requires a manager who is constantly evaluating what is important, what is being delegated, and are delegated tasks being done well (and where the employee needs feedback and coaching).

What you should notice is that while the program focuses on skills independently, you find that they all act in concert like a concert orchestra. Every section playing their part, but all working together and intertwined to create something beyond what any one instrument could do alone.
