Goldilocks Rule of Communication

We are all familiar with the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. I use that story as a way to discuss the level of communication managers should give.

The key part of the story has to do with Goldilocks testing everything out. One bed was too hard, one too soft, and one just right.

Think of communication that way. You can communicate too much, too little, or just the right amount.

However, this is where Goldilocks differs from you. She finds the one that is just right. You won't be able to do that - or at least you won't 99.9% of the time. Communication is hard and people are different. There is no "perfect" level of communication.

This means you will either communicate too much or too little. Given those are your options - ALWAYS choose to communicate too much. It might get annoying for some people, but explain what you are doing.

The fact is that if you communicate too little, you guarantee that someone didn't get the right message (if they got it at all). If you communicate too much, you know they got the message, but are a little sick of hearing it.

What is the point of communication - that they get the message.

Always over-communicate.
