I have been fascinated over the years reading the debate between IQ and EQ - specifically, which is more critical to being a great leader. I have not seen anything yet that tells me the issue has been decided.

What I do think is clear is that a manager has to have both. You have to be knowledgable about your business and your role; you also have to be able to deal with the emotional side of the business. If you are not capable of both, you cannot properly engage everyone on your team. (Unless you had a team of people who are exactly like you - which would be difficult to do and most assuredly would lead to disaster.)

As you create development plans for you and your team, make sure they include ways to improve in both areas.
