Great managers read - a lot. All professionals do. We have access to so much great information that the only way to truly keep up to date and keep your mind sharp is to read.
Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Warren Buffett and Tom Peters (as well as countless other leaders) stress the importance reading. They don't just say they read, they make time to read. It isn't the thing they do when everything else is done, it is one of the things they do ahead of other things that need to get done.
They prioritize reading.
Why? The obvious reason is that it stimulates the brain. New ideas get introduced and critical thinking skills increase. Reading can help you become an expert. Reading fiction even stimulates the brain in different ways.
I set a goal this year of reading 40 books. I had the same goal last year and only got to 31. This year I added the extra criteria that 10 of the 40 need to be fiction. I use Goodreads (an app) to track what I've read and what I want to read. If you use the app, feel free to connect with me on it so we can share our reading lists.
What are your reading goals for the year and how do you plan on holding yourself accountable?
