Treating People Equally is a Folly

I have cognitive difference when it comes to equality. I grew up being told and believing that we want to treat everyone equally. It makes sense and seems virtuous. However, it is simplistic. It isn’t reality.

First, we all have biases, many of them we don’t have enough self-awareness to recognize. So even if we wanted to treat people equally, our biases prevent this.

Second, treating people equally ignores the basic reality that rarely are situations and the individuals the same. Our rules and policies are set up for the simple situation - situations are rarely simply.

Chasing equality will do two things - make the manager crazy and anger every employee.

When you work hard to be fair, you will be successful some of the time. When you try to be equal, you will fail every time.
