Mind Reader

Brian Watkins

Try this test - gather all the job descriptions for your team (and yours as well) and read them. Do any of them have listed as a skill "mind reader"?

Obviously, no.

Which is why when setting expectations you need to be clear on everything. Over-communicate. No one can read your mind. You would never expect that someone could read your mind. This isn't some comedy on Netflix where someone on your team tripped and hit their head and now has the ability to hear your thoughts!

A good rule of thumb - when you think you've communicated enough, communicate more. Then maybe even do some more.

Bonus question: Ask your employees if they think reading your mind is part of their job. You may be shocked when someone says "yes". Not everyone thinks you are being clear.
